100th Women’s Day in Hong Kong

03.08.10

How did Hong Kong celebrate the 100th International Women’s Day? Well from what we saw, there was a lot! With protests, shopping and racing, while wearing high-heels, of course.

It’s the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day and while men around the world are still making the same jokes (“When is International Men’s Day? Snicker, snicker …”), women are taking an increasingly light-hearted approach of their own to this celebration of being female.

While Hong Kong Confederation of Trade Unions held a rally in Mongkok yesterday to protest unequal pay between men and women holding the same job (Chinese restaurant female staff are paid an average 30 per cent less than their male counterparts), a high-heels race was held in Diamond Hill to celebrate International Women’s Day. Equal opportunities were given a place during race day with the couple’s competition, where women competed with their boyfriends and husbands.

High-heels runner May and her boyfriend Cheung told Mingpao that it was really hard to find men’s sized high-heeled shoes for the race.

So in the spirit of this post-modern approach to gender equality, we leave you with one serious fact and some great pictures of IWD events: Hong Kong’s Equal Opportunities Commission revealed that the commission receives 1,000 complaints in a year, 40 percent of which are by women complaining about gender discrimination.
